0 The Size Distribution of the Kuiper Belt Objects
نویسنده
چکیده
The size distribution is determined directly from the current known Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs). We found that there is a peak for the size distribution around 230 km in diameter. For the objects larger than 230 km, the KBOs populate as N(s) ∝ s as we see in Jewitt et al. (1998). For the objects smaller than 230 km, we found N(s) ∝ s. This result from the current observational data is new and very different from the conventional concept of the KBO size distribution. Though the true size distribution might change from what we have after more KBOs be discovered, we argue that the existence of a peak around 150 km to 250 km is likely. Accretion in the Early Kuiper Belt II. Fragmentation
We describe new planetesimal accretion calculations in the Kuiper Belt that include fragmentation and velocity evolution. All models produce two power law cumulative size distributions, NC ∝ r for radii ∼< 0.3–3 km and NC ∝ r for radii ∼> 1–3 km. The power law indices are nearly independent of the initial mass in the annulus, M0; the initial eccentricity of the planetesimal swarm, e0; and the i...
متن کاملA Wide-field Ccd Survey for Centaurs and Kuiper Belt Objects
A modiÐed Baker-Nunn camera was used to conduct a wide-Ðeld survey of 1428 deg2 of sky near the ecliptic in search of bright Kuiper Belt objects and Centaurs. This area is an order of magnitude larger than any previously published CCD survey for Centaurs and Kuiper Belt objects. No new objects brighter than red magnitude and moving at a rate 1A to 20A hr~1 were discovered, although m R \ 18.8 o...
متن کاملThe Radial Distribution of the Kuiper Belt
We examine the radial distribution of the Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) using a method that is insensitive to observational bias effects. This technique allows the use of the discovery distances of all KBOs, independent of orbital classification or discovery circumstance. We verify the presence of an outer edge to the Kuiper Belt, as reported in other works, and we measure this edge to be at given...
متن کاملKuiper Belt evolution due to dynamical friction
In this paper we study the role of dynamical friction on the evolution of a population of large objects (m > 10 g) at heliocentric distances > 70 AU in the Kuiper Belt. We show that the already flat distribution of these objects must flatten further due to nonspherically symmetric distribution of matter in the Kuiper Belt. Moreover the dynamical drag, produced by dynamical friction, causes obje...
متن کاملThe Size Distribution of Kuiper Belt Objects
We describe analytical and numerical collisional evolution calculations for the size distribution of icy bodies in the Kuiper Belt. For a wide range of bulk properties, initial masses, and orbital parameters, our results yield power-law cumulative size distributions, NC ∝ r , with qL ≈ 3.5 for large bodies with radii, r & 10–100 km, and qs ≈ 2.5–3 for small bodies with radii, r . 0.1–1 km. The ...
